How to get your first 10,000 Reels views

The Reels recommendation system in practice: the sample, the retention curve, and the small things that get a video past its first test.

How to get your first 10,000 Reels views Instagram

Ten thousand views is the line where a Reel stops being "your followers plus a few strangers" and becomes something the platform is actively recommending. Most Reels never get there, and the reason is almost always the first few hundred views.

How a Reel is tested

When you post, Instagram shows the Reel to a sample: some of your followers and a few hundred non-followers who watch similar things. It measures, in roughly this order, how long they watch, whether they finish or replay, whether they share, save, comment or like, and whether they tap your profile. If the sample performs, the Reel goes to a bigger sample. If not, it stops at a few hundred views.

The number of followers you have matters less than people think. Plenty of 500-follower accounts get million-view Reels. What matters is the sample's reaction.

Retention: the first three seconds

The single biggest lever is the opening. Viewers decide in under three seconds. What works:

  • Start on the result, the reaction, or the question, not on a logo or a "hey guys".
  • Put text on screen in the first frame that says what the viewer will get.
  • Cut every pause. Short Reels with no dead air outperform long ones with a slow start.
  • Loop-friendly endings. A Reel that replays counts twice.

The rest of the checklist

  1. Original footage. Reels with watermarks from other apps are deprioritised.
  2. One idea per Reel. Confusing Reels get abandoned; simple ones get finished.
  3. A caption with a question. Comments in the first hour push the Reel to the next sample.
  4. Cover and title. For people who find the Reel on your profile grid later.
  5. Post at your peak time so your own followers start the reactions.

Giving a Reel a push

A Reel that sits at 200 views for a day has usually failed its sample, and Instagram rarely re-tests. Views bought in the first hours change the sample: the Reel enters its second test with a view count and watch-time data that says people are watching, and real viewers arrive from there. Our views start within the hour and arrive steadily rather than in one spike, which is the difference between a push and a red flag.

It does not rescue a bad Reel. It gives a good one the audience it needs to be judged.

After 10,000

Reels that pass 10,000 views bring profile visits. Make sure the profile converts them: a clear bio, a pinned Reel, and something recent to watch. That is where views turn into followers.
